Chamber Music Director
Ayca Kartari was born in Bilecik, Turkey and started playing double bass when she was 11 years old. In 2005, having received her Bachelor of Music degree from Dokuz Eylul University State Conservatory in Turkey, she received a full scholarship from the International Yehudi Menuhin Music Academy and Lozan Conservatory in Switzerland to pursue her graduate studies, and studied with Michel Veillon, to obtain a double Masters of Music (Diplome de Concert, Double Bass and Chamber Music) in 2008.
Following that, Ayca toured extensively throughout Europe in various Chamber and Philharmonic Orchestras under the direction of Alberto Lysy, Pierre Amoyal, Howard Griffiths and Prof. Iagoba Fanlo. As a member of the Borusan Philharmonic she performed for Proms at the Royal Albert Hall/London, conducted by Sascha Goetzel and was a member of the double bass quartet BigBoomBass in Izmire/Turkey. During that time, she also organized a chamber music concert series for the State Opera and Ballet and became an adjunct double bass faculty member at Yasar University.
Having moved to Richmond, Virginia in 2016, she now performs with the Richmond Symphony, Virginia Symphony, and the original indie Turkish pop group, Yeni Nolstalji. With over 6 years of experience in teaching bowed stringed instruments both abroad and now in Richmond, she has also organized chamber ensembles and assisted students in achieving their musical goals in violin, viola, cello and double bass.
